SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth -- The organisers of the 26th renewal of the GraceKennedy STETHS
Invitational track and field meet to to start today at 9:00 am in Santa Cruz has increased the
prize monies been offered to the winners of the relays.
Last year the meet offered $40,000 to be shared between the winners of the 4x400m and
4x800m for men and women, but the pool has been increased $60,000 this year with each
winner taking home $15,000.
Additionally, the top high schools in each section will receive points towards the Milo Junior
Grand Prix series.
Eldemire Smith, meet director said on Thursday that for the second year running, a former
STETHS athlete had come up with the money for the cash prize.
Desmond Blake, a former 800m/1,500m runner, donated the money this year.
A seminar to be conducted by Dinsdale Morgan will be done free of cost.
Meanwhile, over 100 teams are expected to take part in the meet that will see competition
in the 200m, 400m, 1,500m and the 400m hurdles that will be separated into Under-17 and
Open categories as well as the relays.
The field events that will be contested are shot put,, discus, high jump and long jump.
Reigning high school boys' and girls' champions --Kingston College and Holmwood Technical --
will headline the list of high schools that will be taking part.
In addition to Holmwood in the girls category, will be Vere Technical, Manchester High,
Edwin Allen High, St Elizabeth Technical and Herbert Morrison.
Kingston College and Calabar will lead the boys section that will also see Jamaica College,
Wolmer's Boys', Munro College and Herbert Morrison in action.
Among the clubs and institutions are the University of the West Indies, High Performance
Training Centre and the University of Technology and MVP which entered some athletes in the field events.
