The Victor 'Poppy' Thomas-coached Lincoln University also made a good start at the
Illinois State Early Bird Meet in Illinois, as several of them finished among the top three.
Former G.C. Foster College standout Gerald Bascoe was a winner in the men's 200 metres
as he cruised to a 22.33-second clocking to beat teammate Gavin Terrelonge, also a past
student of G.C. Foster College, who clocked 22.37 seconds for the runner-up spot. Earlier,
Terrelonge was third in the 60 metres in 6.90 seconds, with former Camperdown High
school sprinter Dwain Bryden placing second in 6.89.
In the reckoning
After a low-keyed season last year, 2007 Osaka World Championship 4x400 metre silver
medallist, Davita Prendergast, made it clear that she will be in the reckoning in the upcoming
season. The former Lincoln Universty athlete, who competed unattached, had a convincing
win in the women's 400 metres where she clocked 54.64 seconds. Former Holmwood Technical
star Nyoka Cole, competing for Lincoln, was second in 57.16 seconds. Cole also had a top-three
finish in the 60 metres, clocking 7.70.
Former World Youth representative, Theo Bennett, also showed good early form. Competing for
Coppin States University at the Navy Invitational Meet in Maryland, Bennett, who competed for
Jamaica College at Champs, clocked 21.67 to win the men's 200 metres and 6.88 seconds for
third in the 60 metres.
At this same meet, former Campion College middle-distance athlete, Theo O'Connor, ran the third
leg for the successful Georgetown University 4x400 metres Universty team, which clocked 3:14.27
for the win.
